YMCA Stories

Still going strong, thanks to the Y

"I fractured my pelvis and my hip in two places. After four months in a wheelchair, I thought I would never walk again. Everybody said, ‘Why don’t you go to the YMCA?’ so I did.

I couldn’t even lift five pounds at first. I now push 90 lbs. with my back! If you come to the YMCA, you’ll have a healthier, longer life. You feel better after exercising, happier and healthier. It helps you feel alive! If you just stay at home and don’t do any exercise, you don’t have the same energy.

Why is campaign so important? Well, you’re helping me because I’m on a fixed income, social security, so I get a break. If I didn’t get that, I couldn’t afford it; that’s the honest to goodness truth! It’s a big help to me. This is a good cause. It’s a family.
And everyone helps one another!”

Gigi Traylor,

YMCA Member & Volunteer
