Meet the Coaches
Dale Shimato

Dale Shimato has been a swim coach for more than 20 years. His experience spans many levels, including novice, junior college, Division 1 collegiate and masters teams.
This California native was born in Los Angeles and attended college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he swam age group. He has been involved in master's swimming in Hawaii and California and is an experienced ocean swimmer.
Nicolas "Nico" Kintz
Born in France, this two-time Olympian has been coaching at the Y since 2006. Nico Kintz graduated from the University of Georgia in 2004, majoring in exercise and sport science.
His list of athletic achievements include:
- Finalist in the 4*100m Freestyle at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney
- Finalist in the 4*200m Freestyle at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens
- 200m Freestyle National Champion
- National Collegiate Athletic Association All-American representing the University of Georgia
His three most meaningful accomplishments are:
- Representing France at the Olympic Games and entering the stadium at the opening ceremonies
- French National Champion
- Graduating college the same year of his last Olympic Games
Scott Smith
Coach Scott Smith brings more than 25 years of experience to the Mission Valley YMCA masters swim program. A swimmer and water polo player in high school and college, he has a master's degree in education and has taught everything from water exercise to lifeguard training to CPR. He was a NCAA Division I Dual-Scholarship Water Polo Player and Swimmer for Fresno State University.
His qualifications include:
- USA Water Polo Accredited Coach at all levels: age-group, high-school, collegiate, masters, and national
- United States Swimming Accredited Coach
- Beach Lifeguard Captain and Instructor
- US Lifesaving and Lifeguard Instructor
- WSIT Certified to teach swimming and lifesaving
Scott
was a national swim coach for El Salvador, and was a DIII (3) coach of the year at Pomona. He has coached water polo at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Pomona Pitzer, Rancho Bernardo High School, RB Tsunami Water Polo Club, UC San Diego, Miramar College, San Diego Men's Zone, Palomar College, Scripps Ranch High School, La Jolla High School and more.
