2008 Annual Support Campaign

THANK YOU to all the hard-working volunteers and staff who participated in Mission Valley YMCA's 2008 Annual Support Campaign. In one month, we raised  $671,000 for the children and families of our community —- an all-time record which was 117% of our goal this year !

Our teams section (comprised of staff and volunteers) raised $438,000 of that amount, while our Board of Management President's Round Table contributed an additional $233,000 to our Star Wars-themed campaign. Everyone involved helped show those who benefit from campaign that there is no greater force than a strong community!

Remember, Mission Valley YMCA accepts donations year-round for the Annual Support Campaign fund. See links at top right for details.

There Is No Greater Force
Than A Strong Community!

It’s For Everybody. Here at the Mission Valley and Toby Wells YMCAs that’s more than just our slogan. It’s a pledge to help build and keep a strong community. We can do that by offering a variety of programs that enable area youth, families, and seniors to live better lives, make better decisions, and ultimately create a brighter future for themselves.

Our ability to fund those offerings is based on the success of our Annual Support Campaign. Last year, we provided vital programs and services to more than 12,255 people in our community through campaign donations. Those services were valued at more than
$1.32 million!

In 2008, we're asking for your help to make that happen again. Your contributions give us the means to offer more options and strengthen those programs already in place, all with the YMCA’s mission as a guide.

Why do we need your support?

For community members to benefit from the YMCA, we must ensure they aren’t excluded because they’re on a fixed income, undergoing financial hardship, or trying to raise a family as a single parent. Each year, our Annual Support Campaign does that by providing financial assistance for those who can’t afford to participate and by funding various outreach programs in the community

How do we use your donations? Last year's annual support campaign provided:

    What will my donation provide?

$50 Enables one child to participate in physical education at the YMCA through our Outreach program.

$75 Allows one child to participate in a four-week gymnastics session.

$100 Provides swimming lessons for five children through the Outreach program.

$150 Helps to subsidize membership for one senior citizen on a limited income.

$500 Helps supplement childcare for a single-parent family.

$1,000 Enables 10 at-risk youth to participate in the PRYDE program.

$2,500 Funds youth sports league activities for 25 students from low-income areas of our community.

$5,000 Provides 30 weeks of camp for children in need.

How does my contribution help?

Mission Valley YMCA is funded only by user fees and contributions to our Annual Support Campaign. The funds we raise stay here in our community and are used specifically for program and membership assistance:

Your donations help send kids to summer, winter, and spring break Camps at our Friars Road and Toby Wells locations or to resident camp at Camp Marston near Julian.

Your dollars help provide physical education, youth sports, gymnastics, and aquatics to children who otherwise would not have those opportunities.

Your contributions help to cover childcare at the YMCA, career luncheons for students, and membership fees for senior citizens and families in need.

YMCA Stories

PRYDE kept him on track

“I was born in Laos. We came to Linda Vista in 1986, and I didn’t know
anything about the language or
culture. I wanted to go to the YMCA and hang out with my friends, because up there we had nothing. But there was a catch. We had to learn about gangs and drugs and how to say no.

PRYDE kept me on track, in school
and in life also. If it weren’t for PRYDE, I would probably be in jail or dead. Seriously. Because I saw all my friends who weren’t in PRYDE who chose other ways of life — be cool, do drugs, join gangs. And now they’re not in a good place.

PRYDE is good for the whole
community. Right now, when I go
back up there, I see a lot of young
kids who need help. I see me at that
age. They need someone to say,
‘You know what, you should go this
way, not that way. And you will have
a life that you will be happy with!’”

Tony Vichitvongsa,
PRYDE Class of 1990

Still going strong, thanks to the Y

“I fractured my pelvis and my hip in
two places. After four months in a
wheelchair, I thought I would never
walk again. Everybody said, ‘Why
don’t you go to the YMCA?’ so I did.
I couldn’t even lift five pounds at first.
I now push 90 lbs. with my back!
If you come to the YMCA, you’ll have
a healthier, longer life. You feel better
after exercising, happier and healthier.
It helps you feel alive! If you just stay
at home and don’t do any exercise,
you don’t have the same energy.

Why is campaign so important? Well, you’re helping me because I’m on a fixed income, social security, so
I get a break. If I didn’t get that, I
couldn’t afford it; that’s the honest to
goodness truth! It’s a big help to me.
This is a good cause. It’s a family.
And everyone helps one another!”

YMCA Member & Volunteer
