Welcome to the Toby Wells YMCA!

This 45,000-square-foot facility is a satellite branch of the Mission Valley YMCA. Located on 6 acres of the former General Dynamics Missile Park site at 5105 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa, the Y serves the communities of Serra Mesa, Kearny Mesa and Tierrasanta.

It offers yet another option for members of the Mission Valley YMCA, who may now utilize four locations with their memberships: the original facility on Friars Road, the YMCA at Hazard Center, Toby Wells YMCA and the Downtown YMCA.

Toby Wells Developmental Preschool (Ages 2 - 5)

The Toby Wells YMCA Developmental Preschool is modeled after the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s “Playing to Learn” curriculum. This program is our guide to
quality care and education of young children ages 2-5 years old.

The cornerstone of this curriculum is children’s play; understood to be essential to the healthy social and cognitive development of all children. We understand play to be the foundation for learning to read and write, and for learning mathematics, science and technology. This method of learning also ensures the foundation of the arts as part of a young child’s learning. Play ensures a sound basis for healthy development and future
academic success.

Toby Wells & the Wells Family

Toby Wells was a young man who, even with his early passing, continues to make a difference. The Toby Wells YMCA is dedicated to both embracing and sharing Toby’s compassion and leadership by making the differences he recognized as important to the community.

"Our family is grateful to have the opportunity to share both Toby’s commitment to caring for others and his tremendous love of life through this interactive community service center. We are hopeful that the Toby Wells YMCA will not only serve as a much deserved permanent tribute to a very caring and influential young man, but also make positive differences in the lives of many for
generations to come,” affirms Adrienne Wells Castaneda.

In the summer of 2004, the Mission Valley YMCA announced that the Lloyd H. Wells Family, through the Toby Wells Foundation, had donated $4 million for the construction of the new Toby Wells YMCA. It is the largest gift in the history of the YMCA of San Diego County.

Lennar Partners, developers of the Spectrum Project, provided the additional support for the project by donating the land (6.8 acres) to the YMCA. In addition, the McGrath Family contributed $1 million to the project and the aquatic center is named after their family.
