The Toby Wells YMCA Developmental
Preschool is modeled after the YMCA of
Greater Toronto’s “Playing to Learn” curriculum. This program is our guide to quality care and education of young children
ages 2-5 years old.
The cornerstone of this curriculum is
children’s play; understood to be essential to
the healthy social and cognitive development
of all children. We understand play to be the
foundation for learning to read and write, and
for learning mathematics, science and
technology. This method of learning also
ensures the foundation of the arts as part of
a young child’s learning. Play ensures a sound
basis for healthy development and future
academic success.
This curriculum provides early educators with
the skills to prepare spaces that are more
conducive to learning, and the best practices
to encourage quality experiences. The staff
will support the parents by providing a safe
environment, actively participate in the child’s
play experiences and observe and document
the milestones in the child’s life to ensure age
appropriate development.
Children will explore and investigate the world
through play, with opportunities to count and
compare, to create pictures and sing and to
make-believe.
