Ages 5 - 12
The Toby Wells YMCA gymnastics program is based on progression, and
we encourage mastering basic skills before moving to harder skills. Classes
are designed to allow for a smooth transition from one class level to the
next. Girls enrolled in Progressive Classes will gain experience on each of
the four women’s gymnastics apparatus: vault, uneven parallel bars, balance
beam, and floor exercise. They will also learn
gymnastics terminology and develop strength, coordination, flexibility, and
self-confidence.
Evaluations are required for gymnasts who want to move up

Girls Progression Classes:
- Novice l (ages 5-6) & Novice ll (ages 7-12)
55-min. classes: In this beginning class, children will be attempting skills that will give them a
strong foundation in gymnastics. They will be learning skills including but not
limited to rolls, cartwheels, and handstands.
- Level l (Intermediate, 85-min. classes)
Girls enrolled in Level 1 have
successfully evaluated out of the
Novice classes, and are ready for
more of a challenge. In Level 1,
gymnasts are introduced to more
upside-down skills and continue
building upon the fundamentals
learned in Novice. Hot Shots available for younger ages.
- Level 2 (Int./Adv., 115-min. classes)
Girls Level 2 is an intermediate class
in which gymnasts will be introduced
to more difficult skills and the higher
balance beams. They will begin
learning “flipping” skills on floor such
as walk overs and handsprings, will
start going upside-down on vault. Hot Shots available for younger ages.
- Level 3 (Advanced, 115-min. classes)
Girls Level 3 continues building on the
skills learned in level 2. In this level
they will be attempting to master skills
including: back handsprings on floor,
front hip circles on bars, handstands
on the high balance beams, and
handstands on vault.
- Pre-Team (115-min. classes)
Pre-Team is a bridge from our
Progressive classes to the
competitive team. In this class they
will be learning skills and routines
needed to be successful in
competition as a Level 4. In this level
form and body positioning will be
stressed, as well as mastery of the
required skills.
