THE Y FOR
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.
Competitive Team
Competitive Team Gymnastics
Evaluation required. Our competitive team trains from 2 to 6 days a week (level dependent). The Mission
Valley YMCA Gymnastics Team competes successfully among private clubs
local and abroad. We have had many state, regional competitors, as well
as Junior Olympic national qualifiers and Junior National team members.
Several boys have made it to the collegiate level. We strive to maintain a positive environment that
builds healthy bodies, strong minds, and willing spirits.
All team members must be members of Mission Valley YMCA, and participation is by tryout only.
All programs take place at Toby Wells YMCA, 5105 Overland Drive, Kearny Mesa, (858) 496-9622. See map. (Toby Wells YMCA is a facility of Mission Valley YMCA.)
Success for Y Gymnasts
at National Competition!
Congratulations to four Toby Wells gymnasts who competed in this year's YMCA Nationals, held June 28 – July 3 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Betsy Armitage, Lauren Arnett, Whitney Burke and Annelise Bauer represented our Y at this annual event, which featured more than 75 YMCA’s from around
the United States and over 3,000 gymnasts throughout
the weekend. Next year the competition will
be held in Savannah, Georgia and we will be attending with more kids! Betsy Armitage is a Level 9 gymnast who competed in the Championship age division. On Saturday, June 30, Betsy qualified 20th in the prelims and made the top 30 on Day 2 of competition. There were approximately 100 girls in her division. On Day 2 of prelims, Betsy qualified for event finals on Beam, Floor and Vault. On Monday July 2, Betsy placed fourth on vault, eighth on floor and 10th on beam (out of the 100 gymnasts) and also took eighth place in the All-Around division. Next year will be Betsy’s last year with Mission Valley YMCA before she goes off to college.
Lauren Arnett is a Level 8 gymnast who competed in prelims on Saturday, June 30. She placed fourth in her session (out of 50 gymnasts) and was 10th going in to All-Around finals (out of more than 200 gymnasts). On Monday, July 2, Lauren competed in the All-Around finals and placed 11th. She also placed second on bars.
Whitney Burke competed at Level 7 at YMCA Nationals. This level does not compete in finals and only has one competition throughout the weekend. Whitney competed on July 1 and placed fourth all around out of 75 gymnasts. Whitney placed in the top 10 on every event, including a second-place finish on the beam!
Annelise Bauer competed in her first Level 6 meet at YMCA
Nationals. This level only competes once during the weekend and does
not have a finals round. Annelise placed in the top 10 (out of approximately 60 gymnasts) on vault at her first Level 6 competition. — posted 7/13/12
